Lord Jesus

Lord Jesus, let me know myself and know Thee,
And desire nothing save only Thee.
Let me hate myself and love Thee.
Let me do everything for the sake of Thee.
Let me humble myself and exalt Thee.
Let me think nothing except Thee.
Let me die to myself and live in Thee.
Let me accept whatever happens as from Thee.
Let me banish self and follow Thee,
and ever desire to follow Thee.
Let me fly from myself and take refuge in Thee,
that I may deserve to be defended by Thee.
Let me fear for myself, let me fear Thee,
and let me be among those who are chosen by Thee.
Let me distrust myself and put my trust in Thee.
Let me be willing to obey for the sake of Thee.
Let me cling to nothing save only to Thee,
and let me be poor because of Thee.
Look upon me, that I may love Thee.
Call me that I may see Thee,
And forever enjoy Thee. - Amen.

- Saint Augustine

The One Whom You Love Is Sick

"Lord Jesus, the one whom You love is sick."
The one whom You love is strayed.
I have lost You.
I cannot find You.
Find me.
Seek me.
I cannot find You.
I have lost my way.
You are the Way.
Find me, or I am utterly lost.
You love me.
I do not know if I love You; but I know You love me.
I do not plead my love, but yours.
I do not plead my strength, but yours.
I do not plead my deed, but yours.
The one whom You love is sick.
I dare not say:
The one who loves You is sick.
My sickness is that I do not love You.
That is the source of my sickness which is approaching death.
I am sinking.
Raise me.
Come to me upon the waters.
Lord Jesus, "the one whom You love is sick."

The Prayer for Courage

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous,
teach me to serve You as You deserve:
to give and not count the cost,
to fight and not heed the wound,
to toil and not seek rest,
to labor and not seek reward,
save that of feeling that I do Your will. -- Amen.

-- Saint Ignatius

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, be my sanctification;
Body of Christ, be my salvation;
Blood of Christ, fill my veins;
Water of Christ's side, wash out my stains;
Passion of Christ, my comfort be;
O good Jesu, listen to me;
In Thy wounds I fain would hide;
Ne'er to be parted from Thy side;
Guard me should the foe assail me;
Call me when my life shall fail me;
Bid me come to Thee above,
With Thy saints to sing Thy love,
World without end. -- Amen.

- Saint Ignatius of Loyola
(Translated by Cardinal Newman)

What Shall I Give Thee?

I have received You into my heart, Jesus Christ, Your Body and Blood, Soul
and Divinity! I begin this day as a day in Heaven. You are in my soul; the
Divine Infant in the crib; the growing boy at Nazareth; the teacher
acclaimed by the crowds on the roads of Galilee; the Savior who performed
such prodigies, the Redeemer who completed His Sacrifice on Calvary. You are
in me, What more can I desire when I possess You, my Lord Jesus?

And now, O good Master! What shall I give You in exchange for Your visit? I
would like to give You a soul all sparkling with purity and sincerity, but
mine is afflicted with so many miseries!

I would like to pray with the burning words of Your Mother and her court of
Heaven, but I feel riveted to earthly things.

I would like to offer You courageous loyalty to my baptismal vows and
confirmation graces, but alas, I have so often been disloyal.

I would like, at least, to have a desire for the Christian life, but I allow
myself to be discouraged by my failures.

O good Jesus! I have nothing to give Thee, and You have given me everything;
You have given Yourself to me. I can only join my poor voice in the chorus
of praise to You, rising out of all the works of Your Creation here on

With the majesty of the mountains, the immensity of the desert, the roar of
the ocean, the fury of the storm, ...I praise Your Power!

With the flowers of the field, the colors of the rainbow, the whiteness of
the snow, the blue of the skies, ... I praise Your Beauty!

With the fruits of the earth, the air I breathe, the light I see, the life I
enjoy, ...I praise Your Goodness!
With the splendor of the stars, the rays of the sun, the moon's pale light,
the depths of space, ...I praise Thine Immensity!

With millions now living on earth, ...I praise Your Mercy!

May our voices unite with the billions of those who inhabited the earth
before us, and out of whose dust the beauty of nature perpetually rises
o ...Praise Your Glory!

May an infinite concert of voices from cottages and palaces, from fields and
forests, from towns and deserts, from workshops and cathedrals, from earth
and from heaven, from time and from eternity, arise to give my thanks unto
Thee! - Amen.

What Am I, O Lord, What Art Thou?

Thank you Lord, most bountiful Redeemer, for having admitted me, a sinner,
to Your life-giving feast. Who am I that You should look upon me with love,
and come down from Heaven in order to wash away my sins in Your Precious
Blood, and to nourish and support my soul with Thy Sacred Body?

If the Heaven of Heavens cannot contain You, and the angels are not clean in
Your sight, who am I, that You should come to me and dwell in me?

What have You discovered in me, O King of sovereign majesty, to induce You
to descend from the height of Your glory to the depths of my misery?

O holy Angels, and you, the redeemed of God, come and listen while I tell
you what great things God has done for my soul. When I was yet poor and
despicable, not venturing to lift my eyes to Heaven on account of my
manifold transgressions, He raised me from the dust, and drew me out of the
mire, that I might sit among princes and eat at His table, all the days of
my life. O give thanks to Him for me, you who are my best friends, for words
fail me rightly to extol such mercies.

What return can I make for His love, cold and insensible as I am? What
manner of praise and worship can I offer, what service can I render to Him,
imperfect as I am?

But You, most merciful and gracious Lord, Who knows my weakness, will not
reject the thanksgiving that in all humility I offer. Thine be the dominion,
the praise and glory forever and ever!

Thy angels and saints praise You because You have visited me with Your
mercy, and Your compassion is above all Your works. All the inhabitants of
Heaven praise You, all creatures on the earth and under the earth; with my
heart and my soul I praise You, with all my powers, my senses, my whole
being; to You alone be honor and glory, be You alone extolled and magnified
to all eternity. -- Amen.

An Act of Oblation

Eternal Father, for You honor, and in thanksgiving for this Holy Communion,
I do offer You the deep humiliation Your Son experienced when Herod caused
Him to be arrayed in the white garment of a fool. I offer You the
maltreatment He received from His oppressors, who dragged Him from place to
place through the streets of Jerusalem, covered Him with mud and filth,
struck Him, beat Him with ropes and frequently felled Him to the ground. For
all this, which He endured for love of me, I give You thanks, I praise You
forever; begging You to forgive all my faults and follies, and to grant me
grace to despise the wisdom of this world and with my whole heart to love
Your eternal wisdom, that henceforth I may neither seek nor desire anything
else but You and what pertains to You.

In like manner O Eternal Father, I offer You the terrible scourging which
Your Son endured while bound to the pillar. The many painful strokes by
which His virginal flesh was torn; the Precious Blood which flowed in
copious streams from every part of His Body and dyed the ground; the
excruciating agony, the indescribable torture then inflicted upon Him; the
shame and confusion He felt when stripped of His garments in presence of a
mocking multitude; the horrible blasphemies uttered against Him, and the
inhuman cruelty of His tortures which He bore with sublime patience.

For all this I give thanks to You. I love, venerate, and bless You
forevermore, beseeching You, through the merits of this mystery, for the
pardon of the sins which I may have committed against holy purity or by
indulgence of the senses, so that in the future I may keep my body in
complete subjection to Your spirit and Your law, and may appear before You
without spot or stain of sin. -- Amen.

Prayer for Help

Lord Jesus, You see my extreme poverty and destitution, You see my frail
nature surrounded with so many crafty, powerful enemies, both exterior and
interior placed amid many perils and countless evils both temporal and
spiritual, from which only You, in Your great mercy, can rescue me. For this
reason, I call upon You, for You know that we cannot obtain the least thing
that is good, either for body or soul, except from You, the Father of mercy
and of consolation, the source and giver of all good gifts. You know that we
cannot rid ourselves of the least thing that is evil, unless You in Your
clemency put it far from us.

Filled with hope and confidence in Your sweet Heart, I cry to the Eternal
Father: Behold O Father, I have within my heart the sweet Heart of Your dear
Son; I offer to You this Heart not that it may accuse me, but plead for me,
not cry for vengeance, but for pardon. What can You refuse to this Heart?
Nothing assuredly, either to Him or to me, when I ask for His sake. Deliver
me, therefore I pray from all my foes and the ills of this life. Help me in
my necessities. Grant me grace to end my life by a holy and happy death. --

An Act of Praise

I praise, magnify, and glorify Thee, Most Holy Trinity, one God. To Thee be
praise, honor, and adoration from every creature, both now and for all
eternity. Glory be to the Father Who created me; glory be to the Son Who
redeemed me; glory be to the Holy Ghost Who sanctified me; glory be to the
Son Who guides me by His wisdom; glory be to the Holy Ghost who sanctifies
me through His love. Blessed be the holy and undivided Trinity, from this
time forth and forever. Praise the Lord all ye nations and let all flesh
bless His Holy Name forever. -- Amen.

Dear Jesus

Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.

Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.

Penetrate my being so that all my life may be only a radiance of You.

Shine through me, and so be in me that every soul I come in contact with may
feel Your presence in my soul.

Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus.

Stay with me, and then I shall begin to shine, so to be a light to others.
The Light, O Jesus will be all from You; none of it will be mine; it will be
You shining on others through me.

Let me thus praise You in the way You love best by shining on those around
me. -- Amen.

-- Cardinal John Newman

An Act of Adoration

O Jesus, within my breast I adore Thee with all the intensity and fervor of
Mary Immaculate at the Infant Crib.

The Angels and Saints in Heaven.

The Angels clustered around the altar.

Saint Mary Magdalene -- "Rabboni-Master."

Saint Thomas -- "My Lord and My God."

Saint Peter -- "Thou art Christ the Son of the Living God."

Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who taketh away the sins of the World.
Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father I prostrate myself before
Thee. -- Amen.

An Act of Love

O Jesus, hidden Love, I run to Thee;
With all the strength I have I worship Thee;
With all the love I have I cling to Thee;
With all my soul I long to be with Thee:
And fear no more to fail, or fall from Thee.

My soul is dark away from Thee, my own;
My eyes are dim in seeking Thee, my own;
My flesh doth pine away from Thee, my own;
My Heart leaps up to Thee, my own;
My spirit faints receiving Thee, my own.

Where in the height of Heaven, is bliss Like Thee?

Where, in the depth of Heaven, is peace like Thee?

Where, in the home of Love, is love like Thee?

With all my heart I give myself to Thee;
And waiting, wait, O King and Spouse for Thee;
Till I am one for evermore with Thee.

O sweetest Jesus, bring me home to Thee.

Free me, O dearest God, from all but Thee;
And break all chains that keep me back from Thee;
Call me, O thrilling Love, I follow Thee;
Thou art my all, and I have nought but Thee;
O hidden Love, Who now art loving me;
O wounded Love, Who once was dead for me;
O sun-crowned Love, Who alive for me;
O patient Love, Who weariest not of me;
Alone of all, Thou weariest not of me;
O bear with me till I am lost in Thee;
O bear with me till I am found in Thee.

O Jesus, deathless love, Who seekest me,
Thou Who didst die for longing love of me,
Thou King in all Thy beauty come to me,
White-robed, blood-sprinkled Jesus, come to me
And go no more, dear Lord, away from me.

O God, most beautiful, most priceless One,
O God, most glorious, Uncreated One,
O God, Eternal, beautiful One,
O God, O Infinite and Hidden One,
O God, Immense, O God the Living One,
Thou, wisdom of the Everlasting One,
Thou, ever-loved and ever-loving One,
O Jesus, hidden Love, I run to Thee,
With all the strength I have I worship Thee.

With all the Love I have I cling to Thee.

With all my soul I long to be with Thee.
And fear no more to fail or fall from Thee.

Where in the home of Love, is love like Thee.

With all my heart I give myself to Thee.

And waiting, wait, O Jesus for Thee. - Amen.

For Fidelity to God's Will

O Jesus, stretched out upon the cross, I implore You, give me the grace of
doing faithfully the most holy will of Your Father, in all things, always
and everywhere. And when this will of God will seem to me very harsh and
difficult to fulfill, it is then I beg You, Jesus, may power and strength
flow upon me from Your wounds and may my lips keep repeating, "Your will be
done, O Lord." O Savior of the world, Lover of man's salvation, who in such
terrible torment and pain forget Yourself to think only of the salvation of
souls, O most compassionate Jesus, grant me the grace to forget myself that
I may live totally for souls, helping You in the work of salvation,
according to the most holy will of Your Father. - Amen.

Special Act of Sorrow

Forgive me my sins, O Lord forgive me my sins: the sins of my youth, the
sins of my age, the sins of my soul, the sins of my body, my idle sins, my
serious voluntary sins, the sins I know, the sins I have concealed so long,
and which are now hidden from my memory. I am truly sorry for every sin,
mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present time
because they have crucified You. I know my sins have wounded Your tender
Heart, O my Savior, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through the most
bitter passion of my Redeemer.

O my Jesus, forget and forgive what I have been. - Amen.

O My Crucified God

O my crucified God, behold me at Thy feet; deign to cast me not out, now
that I appear before Thee as a sinner. I have offended Thee exceedingly in
the past, my Jesus, but it shall be so no longer. Before my God, I put all
my sins; I have now considered them and behold, they do not deserve Thy
pardon; but do Thou cast one glance upon Thy sufferings and see how great is
the worth of that Precious Blood that flows from Thy veins. O my God, at
this hour close Thine eyes to my want of merit and open them to Thine
infinite merit, and since Thou has been pleased to die for my sins, grant me
forgiveness for them all, that I may no longer feel the burden of my sins,
for this burden dear Jesus, oppresses me beyond measure. Assist me, my
Jesus, for I desire to become good whatsoever it may cost; take away,
destroy, utterly root out all that Thou findest in me contrary to Thy holy
will. At the same time I pray Thee, O Jesus, to enlighten me, that I may be
able to walk in Thy holy light. - Amen.

- Blessed Gemma Galgani

Come Lord Jesus

Come Lord Jesus, take away scandals from Your kingdom which is my soul, and
reign there. You alone have the right. For greediness comes to claim a
throne within me; haughtiness and self-assertion would rule over me; pride
would be my king; luxury says, "I will reign"; ambition, detraction, envy
and anger struggle within me for the mastery. I resist as far as I am able;
I struggle according as help is given me. I call on my Lord Jesus. For his
sake I defend myself, since I acknowledge myself as wholly his possession.
He is my God, Him I proclaim my Lord. I have no other king than my Lord,
Jesus Christ. Come, then, O Lord, and disperse these enemies by your power,
and you shall reign in me, for you are my King and my God. - Amen.

- Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

O Emitter of Light

O Emitter of light that is emitted, whose sun rises on the righteous and the
wicked; who made light to illuminate the universe, enlighten our hearts. O
Ye Master of all grant us at this present day to gratify Thee. Protect us
from every bad thing, from every sin and from every adversative power,
through Our Lord Jesus Christ, with Whom Thou art blessed together with the
Holy Spirit, the Life-Giver, and Who is equal with Thee now and unto the
ages of ages. - Amen.

A Cold Affair

My prayer is but a cold affair, Lord, because my love burns with so small a
flame, but you who are rich in mercy will not mete out to them your gifts
according to the dullness of my zeal, but as your kindness is above all
human love so let your eagerness to hear be greater than the feeling in my
prayers. Do this for them and with them, Lord, so that they may speed
according to your will and thus ruled and protected by you, always and
everywhere, may they come at last to glory and eternal rest, through you who
are living and reigning God, through all ages. - Amen.

- Saint Anslem.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou
anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will
dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

A Prayer for Daily Neglects

Eternal Father, I offer You the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with all its love,
all its sufferings and all its merits.

To expiate all the sins I have committed this day and all my life. Glory be
to the Father...

To purify the good I have done poorly this day and during all my life. Glory
be to the Father...

To supply for the good I ought to have done, and that I have neglected this
day and all my life. Glory be to the Father...

- Amen.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, thou Wisdom from on high
And order all things, far and nigh
To us the path of knowledge show
And cause us in her ways to go
Repeat Chorus.

O Come, O come Thou Lord of might,
Who to thy tribes on Sinai's height
In ancient times didst give the Law,
In cloud and majesty and awe.
Repeat Chorus.

O Come, Thou Rod of Jesse's stem,
From every foe deliver them
That trust thy mighty power to save
And give them victory o'er the grave.
Repeat Chorus.

O Come Thou key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path of misery.
Repeat Chorus.

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight
Repeat Chorus.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind
Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease
Fill the whole world with heaven's peace
Repeat Chorus.

O Come, Redeemer Of Mankind

O come, Redeemer of mankind, appear,
Thee with full hearts the virgin born we greet;
Let every age with rapt amazement hear
That wondrous birth which for our God is meet.

Not by the will of man, or mortal seed,
But by the Spirit's breathed mysterious grace
The Word of God became our flesh indeed,
And grew a tender plant of human race.

Lo! Mary's virgin womb its burden bears;
Nor less abides her virgin purity;
In the King's glory see our nature shares;
Here in His temple God vouchsafes to be.

From His bright chamber, virtue's holy shrine
The royal Bridegroom cometh to the day;
Of twofold substance, human and divine,
As giant swift, rejoicing on His way.

Forth from His Father to the world He goes,
Back to the Father's face His way regains,
Far down to souls beneath His glory shows,
Again at God's right hand victorious reigns.

With the eternal Father equal, Thou,
Girt with our flesh dost triumph evermore,
Strengthening our feeble bodies here below
With endless grace from Thine own living store.

How doth Thy lowly manger radiant shine!
On the sweet breath of night new splendor grows;
So may our spirits glow with faith divine,
Where no dark cloud of sin shall interpose.

All praise and glory to the Father be,
All praise and glory to His only Son,
All praise and glory, Holy Ghost, to Thee,
Both now, and while eternal ages run.

- St Ambrose

O Hope Of Every Contrite Heart

O hope of every contrite heart,
O joy of all the meek,
To those who fall, how kind Thou art!
How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find?
Ah this - Nor tongue nor pen can show;
The love of Jesus, what it is
None but His loved ones show.

Jesus, our only joy be Thou,
As Thou our prize will be;
Jesus, be Thou our glory now,
And through eternity.

- Bernard of Clairvaux;

Jesu, by that shuddering dread which fell on Thee;
Jesu, by that cold dismay which sicken'd Thee;
Jesu, by that pang of heart which thrill'd in Thee;
Jesu, by that mount of sins which crippled Thee;
Jesu, by that sense of guilt which stifled Thee;
Jesu, by that innocence which girdled Thee;
Jesu, by that sanctity which reigned in Thee;
Jesu, by that Godhead which was one with Thee;
Jesu, spare these souls which are so dear to Thee;
Who in prison, calm and patient, wait for Thee;
Hasten, Lord, their hour, and bid them come to Thee.
To that glorious home, where they shall ever gaze on Thee. -Amen

- John Henry Newman

A Prayer to Redeem Lost Time

My God! Source of all mercy! I acknowledge Your sovereign power, while
recalling the wasted years that are past, I believe that You, Lord, can in
an instant turn this loss to gain. Miserable as I am, yet I firmly believe
that You can do all things. Please restore to me the time lost, giving me
Your grace, both now and in the future, that I may appear before You in
"wedding garments." - Amen.

- Saint Teresa of Ávila

Go Forth In Peace

Go forth in peace, for you have followed the good road. Go forth without
fear, for he who created you has made you holy, has always protected you,
and loves you as a mother. Blessed be you, my God, for having created me.

Praise and glory to you, O loving Jesus Christ, for the most sacred wound in
your side, and by that adorable wound and by your infinite mercy which you
made known to us in the opening of your breast to the soldier Longinus, and
so to us all.

I pray you, O most gentle Jesus, having redeemed me by baptism from original
sin, so now, by your Precious Blood, which is offered and received
throughout the world, deliver me from all evils, past, present and to come.

And, by your most bitter death, give me a lively faith, a firm hope, and a
perfect charity, so that I may love you with all my heart, all my soul, and
all my strength; make me firm and steadfast in good works and grant me
perseverance in your service so that I may be able to please you always. -

- Saint Clare.

How are You at once the source of fire,
how also the fountain of dew?

How at once burning and sweetness,
how a remedy for all corruption ?

How do You make gods of us men,
how do You make darkness light?

How do You make one reascend from Hell,
how do You make us mortals imperishable ?

How do You draw darkness to light,
how do You triumph over night?

How do You illumine the heart,
how do You transform me entirely?

How do You become one with men,
how do You make them sons of God?

How do You burn them with Your love,
how do You wound them without a sword ?

How can You be patient, how can You endure ?
How do You not remunerate at once ?

How do You see the actions of all,
You who dwell beyond all creatures ?

How do You look at the conduct of each one,
You, who are so far from us ?

Give patience to Your servants,
so that trials may not overwhelm them!

- Saint Symeon

Saint Teresa's Bookmark

Let nothing disturb thee.

All things are passing.
Patience obtains all things.
He who has God has everything.
God alone suffices.

Watch, O Lord

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake,
or watch, or weep tonight,
and give Your Angels and Saints
charge over those who sleep.

Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ,
rest Your weary ones,
bless Your dying ones,
soothe Your suffering ones,
pity Your afflicted ones
shield Your joyous ones.

And all for Your love's sake. - Amen.

- Saint Augustine

Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, I thank You for the quiet moments of this busy day when You
spoke to me of Your abiding love. Teach me now as I lay down to rest how to
listen to You when You speak in the silence of the night, in the silence of
my heart. Teach me waking or sleeping how to watch and how to listen for
Your still, small voice which gives meaning and direction to every moment of
my life. - Amen.

- Michael Buckley

Into Your Hands

Into Your hands, O Lord and Father, we commend our souls and our bodies, our
parents and our homes, friends and servants, neighbors and kindred, our
benefactors and brethren departed, all Your people faithfully believing, and
all who need Your pity and protection. Enlighten us with Your holy grace,
and suffer us never more to be separated from You, who are one God in
Trinity, God everlasting. - Amen.

- Saint Edmund of Abingdon

To the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, as the day ends and the dawn of salvation draws ever closer, we
thank You for Your presence which throughout the day sanctified our lives
and took our fleeting moments into the bosom of the Father. We ask pardon
for those lapses when through sloth and willfulness we forgot to live by
Your Spirit without which nothing is acceptable to the Father. We ask You
this night for a quiet rest, and at the end Your eternal peace which
surpasses all understanding. - Amen.

- Michael Buckley

O Lord Our God

O Lord our God, what sins I have this day committed in word, deed, or
thought, forgive me, for You are gracious, and You love all men. Grant me
peaceful and undisturbed sleep, send me Your guardian angel to protect and
guard me from every evil, for You are the guardian of our souls and bodies,
and to You we ascribe glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost,
now and forever and unto the ages of ages. - Amen

Be Present

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this
night, that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting
world may repose upon Your eternal changelessness, through the everlasting
Christ our Lord. - Amen.

Abide With Us

Abide with us, Lord, for it is toward evening and the day is far spent;
abide with us and with Your whole Church. Abide with us in the evening of
the day, in the evening of life, in the evening of the world. Abide with us
and with all Your faithful ones, O Lord, in time and eternity. - Amen.

- Lutheran Manual of Prayer

O You, Who were crucified for our sake,
have mercy upon us.

Holy God, Holy Almighty, Holy Immortal,

Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord bless us. - Amen.

A Preface to Prayer

Almighty Father, I beg:
Place the Precious Blood of Jesus
before my lips before I pray,
that my prayers may be purified
before they ascend to Your divine altar.

- Saint Mary Magdalen de Pazzi

God, Our Father

God, our Father, we are exceedingly frail and indisposed to every virtuous
and gallant undertaking. Strengthen our weakness, we beseech You, that we
may do valiantly in this spiritual war; help us against our own negligence
and cowardice, and defend us from the treachery of our unfaithful hearts;
for Jesus Christ's sake. - Amen.

- Thomas á Kempis

One Thing Necessary

O my God, help me to remember:
That time is short, eternity is long.

What good is all the greatness of this world at the hour of death?

To love You, my God, and save my soul is the one thing necessary.

Without You, there is no peace, no joy.

My God, I need fear nothing but sin.

For to lose You, my God, is to lose all.

My God, help me to remember:

That to gain all I must leave all.

That in loving You I have all good things: the infinite riches of Christ and
His Church, the motherly protection of Mary, peace beyond understanding and
joy unspeakable!

Eternal Father, Your Son has promised that whatever we ask in His Name will
be given to us. In His Name I pray: give me a burning faith, a joyful hope,
a holy love for Jesus Christ. Give me the grace of perseverance in doing
Your will in all things. Do with me what You will and never let me be
separated from You. My God and my All, make me a saint! - Amen.

Lamb of God, Who didst show us Thy greatest mercy in redeeming the world on
the cross, spare us O Lord.
Lamb of God, Who dost mercifully offer Thyself for us in every Holy Mass,
graciously hear us, O Lord.
Lamb of Go, Who takest away the sins of the world, through Thy inexhaustible
mercy, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

V. The tender mercies of the Lord are over all His works.
R. The mercies of the Lord I will sing forever.

Let us pray.
O God, Whose Mercy is infinite and whose treasures of pity are
inexhaustible, graciously look down upon us and increase in us Thy Mercy so
that we may never, even in the greatest trials, give away to despair, but
may always trustfully conform ourselves to Thy Holy Will which is Mercy
itself. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Mercy, Who with Thee and
the Holy Spirit shows us Mercy for ever and ever. - Amen

Prayer Commending One's Self to God

O Lord, into Your most merciful hands I commend my body and soul, thoughts
and acts, desires and intentions. I commend the needs of my body and soul,
future and past, my faith and hope, the end of my life, the day and hour of
my death, the burial and resurrection of my body.

O most merciful God, whose clemency the sins of the world can never
transcend, take me, a sinner, under the wings of Your protection and deliver
me from every evil. Cleanse my iniquities, grant me a reformation of my
life, and protect me against future transgressions, that I may in no manner
ever anger You.

Shelter my weakness from passions and evil persons, guard me against my
visible and invisible enemies, lead me on the road of salvation and to
Yourself, the safe harbor and haven of my desires.

Grant me a happy, peaceful, Christian death, and protect me from evil
spirits. Be merciful to me, Your servant, at the great judgment, and number
me among the blessed flock who stand on Your right, that, together with
them, I may forever glorify You (sign of the cross), my Creator. - Amen.

Prayer for Wisdom and Virtue

My God, by whose grace I am able to distinguish good from evil, I beseech
You: do not permit me to act against Your commandments by word, deed, or
thought. Especially guard me, Lord, when passions assail me and tempt me
against Your commandments. Grant me strength against the enemies of my
salvation, and protect me that, with my advancing years, I may each day
become more wise and virtuous. Grant this through the grace and mercies of
Your only-begotten Son, with Whom You are blessed ?, together with Your
all-holy, gracious, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. -

Te Deum

You are God, we praise You;
You are the Lord, we acclaim You,
You are the Eternal Father, all creation worships You.
To You all angels, all the powers of heaven,
Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and Earth are full of Your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise You.

The noble fellowship of prophets praise You.

The white robed army of martyrs praise You.

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims You:
Father, of majesty unbounded,
Your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,
and the Holy Spirit advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the King of Glory,
the Eternal Son of the Father.

When You became man to set us free
You did not spurn the Virgin's womb.

You overcame the sting of death,
and opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God's right hand in glory.

We believe that You will come, and be our judge.

Come then Lord and help Your people bought with the price
of Your own blood, and bring us with Your Saints to glory

Save Your people, Lord, and bless Your inheritance.

Govern and uphold them now and always.

Day by day we bless You.

We praise Your name for ever.

Keep us today, Lord, from all sin.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

Lord show us Your love and mercy;
For we put our trust in You.

In You, Lord, is our hope: and we shall never hope in vain. - Amen.

I Have a Mission

O my God, You have created me to do some definite service.

You have committed some work to me
which You have not committed to another.

I have my mission,
I am a link in a chain,
a bond of connection between persons.
You have not created me for naught.

Therefore I will trust You,
wherever I am.

If I am in sickness,
my sickness may serve You.

If I am in perplexity,
my perplexity may serve You.

If I am in sorrow,
my sorrow may serve You.

You do nothing in vain.
You know what You are about.

Though friends be taken away,
though I feel desolate,
though my spirits sink,
though my future is hidden from me,
yet will I trust You
for You know what You are about.

I ask not so much to see as to be used;
through Christ our Lord. - Amen.

- Cardinal John Newman

My God, I Firmly Believe

My God, I firmly believe that You are here and see me perfectly, and that
You observe all my actions, all my thoughts, and the most secret movements
of my heart. You permit me a sinner, who has so often offended You, to
remain in Your presence, and it is Your goodness and bounty which command me
to come to You. Give me grace, therefore, to pray as I should, and send Your
Holy Spirit upon me to kindle in my heart the fire of Your love.

Heavenly Father, I offer You the life and death of Your Son, and with them
my affections and resolutions, my thoughts, words, deeds and sufferings this
day and all my life, to honor Your adorable majesty, to thank You for all
Your benefits, to satisfy for my sins, and to obtain the assistance of Your
grace so that I may persevere to the end in doing Your holy will, and may
love and enjoy You forever in Your glory.

God our Father, You know how weak I am. Do not leave me to myself but take
me under Your protection and give me grace to act upon my holy resolutions.
Enlighten my understanding with a lively faith, raise up my will to a firm
hope, and inflame it with an ardent charity. Strengthen my weakness, and
cure the corruption of my heart. Grant that I may overcome the enemies of my
soul, and that I may make good use of Your grace, and if it be that I should
die today, grant me the gift of final perseverance.

Heavenly Father, grant that by the guidance of the Holy Spirit we may
discern Your holy will, and by the grace of the same Spirit we may also do
it, gladly and with our whole hearts, for the glory of Your Son Jesus Christ
our Lord.

Grant us, O Lord, to pass this day in gladness and peace, without stumbling
and without stain, that, reaching the eventide victorious over all
temptations, we may praise You, the eternal God, who are blessed, and
governs all things, world without end. - Amen.

- Mozarabic Liturgy

O God, Our Father

O God, our Father, we thank You for waking us to see the light of this new
day. Grant that we may waste none of its hours; soil none of its moments;
neglect none of its opportunities; fail in none of its duties. And bring us
to the evening time undefeated by any temptation, at peace with ourselves,
and with You. This we ask for Your love's sake. - Amen.

- William Barclay

O God, Our Father

O God, our Father, help us all through this day so to live that we may bring
help to others, credit to ourselves and to the name we bear, and joy to
those that love us, and to You.

May we be:
cheerful when things go wrong,
persevering when things are difficult,
serene when things are irritating.

Enable us to be:
helpful to those in difficulties
kind to those in need,
sympathetic to those whose hearts are sore and sad.

Grant that;
nothing may make us lose our tempers,
nothing may take away our joy,
nothing may ruffle our peace,
nothing may make us bitter towards anyone.

So grant that through all this day all with whom we work, and all those whom
we meet, may see in us the reflection of the master, whose we are, and whom
we seek to serve. This we ask for Your love's sake. - Amen.

- William Barclay

As I Begin This Day

As I begin this day
become flesh again
in me, Father.
Let Your timeless and everlasting love
live out this sunrise to sunset
within the possibilities,
and the impossibilities
of my own, very human life.

Help me to become
Christ to my neighbor,
food to the hungry
health to the sick,
friend to the lonely,
freedom to the enslaved,
in all my daily living. - Amen.

- J. Barrie Shepherd

Father in Heaven

Father in heaven, You have given us a mind to know You, a will to serve You,
and a heart to love You. Be with us today in all that we do, so that Your
light may shine out in our lives.

We pray that we may be today what You created us to be, and may praise Your
name in all that we do. We pray for Your Church: may it be a true light to
all nations; May the Spirit of Your Son Jesus guide the words and actions of
all Christians today. We pray for all who are searching for truth: bring
them Your light and Your love.

Give us, Lord, a humble, quiet, peaceable, patient, tender and charitable
mind, and in all our thoughts words and deeds a taste of the Holy Spirit.
Give us Lord, a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of You.
Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation, dullness in prayer. Give us
fervor and delight in thinking of You and Your grace, Your tender compassion
towards me. The things that we pray for, good Lord, give us grace to labor
for, through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Amen.

- Saint Thomas More

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

Let us give thanks to the beneficent and merciful God, the Father of our
Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ, for He has covered us, supported us,
preserved us, accepted us unto Him, had compassion on us, sustained us, and
brought us to this hour.

Let us then ask Him, the Almighty Lord our God, to keep us in all peace this
holy day and all the days of our life.

O Master, Lord, God Almighty, Father of our Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus
Christ, we thank Thee upon every condition, for any condition, and in
whatever condition, for Thou has covered us, supported us, preserved us,
accepted us unto Thee, had compassion on us, sustained us, and brought us
unto this hour.

Therefore, we pray and entreat Thy goodness, O Lover of mankind. Grant us to
complete this holy day and all the days of our life in all peace with Thy
fear. All envy, all temptation, all the workings of Satan, the intrigue of
wicked people, the rising up of enemies, hidden and manifest, do Thou cast
away from us, and from Thy people, and from this, Thy holy place.

Whereas of things that are good and useful do Thou grant unto us, for Thou
art He who gave us the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and
every power of the enemy; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from the evil one.

Through the grace and mercies and love-of-man of Thine only begotten Son,
our Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ, through whom is due unto Thee glory
and honor and power together with Him and the Holy Spirit, the Life-Giver,
who is consubstantial with Thee now and ever, and to the ages of all ages. -

Sancti, Venite

Draw nigh and take the Body of the Lord,
and drink the Holy Blood for you outpoured.

Saved by that Body and that Holy Blood,
with souls refreshed, we render thanks to God.

Mankind is ransomed from eternal loss
by Flesh and Blood offered upon the cross.

Salvation's giver, Christ, the only Son,
by His dear Cross and Blood the victory won.

Offered was He for greatest and for least,
himself the Victim, and himself the Priest.

Victims are offered by the law of old,
which in a type this heavenly mystery told.

He, Ransomer from death, and light from shade,
now gives His holy grace His Saints to aid.

Approach ye then with faithful hearts sincere,
and take the safeguard of salvation here.

He, that His Saints in this world rules and shields,
to all believers life eternal yields;

With Heavenly Bread makes them that hunger whole,
gives living waters to the thirsting soul. - Amen.

A Marian Prayer Before Communion

Mother Mary, you who prepared the first resting place for God on earth, who
prepared the manger for Him on Christmas night, and your own pure heart
again and again to receive Him in Holy Communion. Prepare mine for Him, now.
Make haste, dear Mother, for the time is short. Would that I had the heart
and love for God and neighbor which you communicated. Give me this day your
Jesus, as you gave Him to the shepherds and the kings.

I receive Him from Your most pure hands. Tell Him I am your baptized child
and His confirmed soldier. Thus He will look upon me with a more loving eye,
and when He comes He will press me more closely to His Sacred Heart. - Amen.

Preparation for Mass

Receive, O Holy Trinity, One God, this Holy Sacrifice of the Body and Blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ, which I, Your unworthy servant, desire now to
offer to Your Divine Majesty by the hands of this Your minister, with all
the sacrifices which have ever been or will be offered to You, in union with
that most Holy Sacrifice offered by the same Christ our Lord at the Last
Supper, and on the Altar of the Cross. I offer it to You with the utmost
affection and devotion, out of pure love for Your infinite goodness, and
according to the most holy intention of the same Christ our Lord, and our
Holy Mother the Church.

God, almighty and merciful, grant us through this Holy Sacrifice, joy and
peace, a holier life, time to do penance, grace and consolation of the Holy
Spirit, and perseverance in good works. - Amen.

Offering of the Sacred Heart

Dear Jesus, I ardently desire to receive You. The moment draws near, the
rapturous moment, in which I shall receive You, my God, into my soul. I come
to You, I run to meet You with the utmost devotion and reverence of which I,
as a little child, am capable. Stretch forth Your most sacred hands to
embrace my soul, Your pierced hands which were stretched forth amid the
anguish of Your Passion to embrace all sinners. I stretch forth not only my
hands, but my heart and my soul to embrace You and to lead You into the
innermost and secret recess of my heart.

Would that I had within me as great a devotion, love and purity as You have
ever been adored with by the heart of any mortal. Would that I were filled
with all virtues, with all holy desires, with perfect devotion. Would that I
had the purity of all Your Angels, the charity of all Your Apostles, the
holiness of all Confessors, the chastity and cleanliness of heart of all
Virgins and the holy fire of love of all the Martyrs.

Would that I could receive You now with all that devotion, reverence and
love with which Your most Blessed Mother received You in Your Incarnation,
and in Your adorable Eucharist! Would that I had Your own sacred and divine
Heart, that I might receive You as Your ineffable Majesty deserves!

I offer You, my sweetest Jesus, to be my fitting preparation, to make amends
for all my unworthiness, my negligences, my lack of preparation, devotion
and affections, I offer You the love which the Saints and the Blessed Mother
had when they received You in this Holy Sacrament.

I offer You, Most Holy Jesus, Your own meritorious Heart, and all the
ineffable virtues and graces which the most Blessed Trinity bestowed without
measure upon it, that all my vileness and all my unworthiness may be
covered, and that a proper and most peaceful abode may be prepared for
You. - Amen.

Prayer of Saint John Chrysostom

O Lord my God, how well I know that I am unworthy that You should enter into
the temple of my soul.

But I pray You, as You humbled yourself and became man for our sake, now
also be patient with my lowliness.

As You did not refuse to enter the house of Simon and dine there with
sinners, now enter the abode of my humble and sinful soul.

As You did not reject the sinful woman who approached and touched You, in
like manner, do not reject me, a sinner, as I come to You and also touch

Grant that I partake of Your most pure Body and precious Blood for the
health of my soul and body, for the remission of my sins, for my protection
against attacks of the Devil, for the increase of Your divine grace, and for
the inheritance of Your heavenly kingdom.

I pray You, O gracious Lord, sanctify my soul and body, and make me worthy
to stand at Your right with all Your saints. - Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Ambrose

O loving Lord Jesus Christ, I a sinner, presuming not on my own merits, but
trusting in Your mercy and goodness, with fear and trembling approach the
table of Your most sacred banquet. For I have defiled both my heart and body
with many sins, and have not kept a strict guard over my mind and my tongue.
Therefore, O gracious God, O awful Majesty, I, a wretched creature,
entangled in difficulties, have recourse to Thee the fount of mercy; to You
do I fly that I may be healed, and take refuge under Your protection, and I
ardently desire to have Him as my Savior, Whom I am unable to withstand as
my Judge.

To You, O Lord, I show my wounds, to You I lay bare my shame. I know that my
sins are many and great, on account of which I am filled with fear. But I
trust in Your mercy, of which there is no end. Look down upon me, therefore,
with the eyes of Your mercy on me, who am full of misery and sin, You Who
will never cease to let flow the fountain of mercy.

O Victim of salvation, offered for me and for all mankind on the tree of the
cross. Hail, noble and precious Blood, flowing from the wounds of my
crucified Lord Jesus Christ and washing away the sins of the whole world.
Remember, O Lord, Your creature, whom You have redeemed with Your Blood. I
am grieved because I have sinned, I desire to make amends for what I have

Take away from me therefore, O most merciful Father, all my iniquities and
sins, that, being purified both in soul, and body, I may worthily partake of
the Holy of Holies; and grant that this holy oblation of Your Body and
Blood, of which though unworthy I pur-pose to partake, may be to me the
remission of my sins, the per-fect cleansing of my offenses, the means of
driving away all evil thoughts and of renewing all holy desires, the
accomplishment of works pleasing to You, as well as the strongest defense
for soul and body against the snares of my enemies. - Amen.

A Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Most gracious God, in Your loving kindness incline Your ears to our prayers
and enlighten our hearts with the grace of the Holy Spirit, that we may
worthily celebrate Your mysteries and deserve to love You with an
everlasting charity.

O God, to Whom every heart is open, to Whom every wish sounds like a word,
and from Whom no secret is hidden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
infusion of Your Holy Spirit; that we may perfectly love You and worthily
offer praise to You.

Burn our desires and our hearts with the fire of the Holy Spirit, O Lord,
that we may serve You with a chaste body, and with a clean heart be pleasing
to You.

Grant, O Lord, that the Advocate, who proceeds from You, may enlighten our
minds; and may He lead us into all truth, as was promised by Your Son.

May the power of the Holy Spirit be near us, O Lord, mercifully to cleanse
our hearts and defend us from all harm.

O God, Who taught the Hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy
Spirit, grant that, in the same spirit, we may relish what is right and
always rejoice in His consolation.
O Lord, visit our minds and cleanse our thoughts, we beg You, that our Lord
Jesus Christ, Your Son, at His coming may find in us a home prepared for
Him. Who with You lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God,
world without end. - Amen.

Prayer of Thomas á Kempis

Confiding in Thy goodness and great mercy, O Lord, I come a sick man to my
Savior, a creature to my Creator.

How dare a sinner appear before Thee, and how dost Thou vouchsafe to come to
a sinner!

O sweetest and most kind Jesus, how great reverence and thanks with
perpetual praise are due to Thee for the receiving of Thy sacred Body!

What can I think of better or more wholesome to my soul than to humble
myself entirely in Thy presence, O Lord, Whom I never can reverence as much
as I ought, and yet Whom I long to receive with devotion?

I praise Thee, my God, and extol Thee forever; I despise myself in my

Thou, the Lord of all things, willest to be with me in this banquet.

Preserve my body and soul without stain, that with a glad and clean
conscience I may receive these holy mysteries for my eternal salvation.

It is of Thine Own mercy Thou doest this, not for my merits.

Thou art the most Holy One, and I am the scum of sinners.

Thou bowest down to me, who am not worthy to look up to Thee.

Behold Thou comest to me Thou willest to be with me Thou invitest me to Thy

Thou willest to give me none other than Thyself the living Bread Who didst
come down from Heaven.

Be glad, O my soul, and give thanks to God for so noble a gift and so
singular a solace left thee in this valley of tears. - Amen.
