Mount Carmel Church

Munnar, Kerala, South India 

Situated in MUNNAR. This hill station is reached from Kottayam (148 kms), and from Ernakulam (139 kms). Its elevation of 1,524 mts / 5000 ft, gives a cool, bracing climate.

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was started in the year 1898 in the High Rrange of Munnar.

Rev. Fr. Allophones O.C.D., the missionary of the Carmel Society of Spain started teaching the Bible here and continued it till his last days in the year 1916. His body is buried here.

In the year 1922 His excellency Philaceous, O.C.D. built the Priest's Hostel. Rev.Fr. Saloostin O.C.D. built the St. Mary of Lourdes Grotto. His greatest donation was the St. Mount Carmel Church, which was rennovated in the year 1938.

In a year two days are celebrated as grand festival days. The festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on the last Sunday of October each year.

The festival of St. Antony is also celebrated during the middle of January.
